SS-31, also called elamipretide, is a four-amino-acid peptide studied for interactions with cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
Areas of research interest
Current evidence
Research spans cells, animals and small human trials. In a 12-participant Barth syndrome crossover study, primary outcomes were not met during the blinded phase. A separate 14-participant procedural pilot reported study-specific findings.
Important limitations
The human studies were small and setting-specific. Open-label observations are more susceptible to bias, while animal findings cannot be assumed to translate to people or to a catalogue material.
